The Jurassic Park of Fly Fishing in Baja
Magdalena Bay lies on the Pacific side of Baja California Sur, where hundreds of square miles of rich marine ecosystem create an extraordinary saltwater fly-fishing environment. Mangrove flats, volcanic islands, beaches, and steep offshore waters combine to offer an incredibly diverse fishery in a remote and largely untouched setting.
Offshore is where the main spectacle unfolds. Massive schools of sardines and mackerel attract Striped Marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna, and other pelagic predators. Frigate birds and pelicans diving into the bait balls reveal the feeding activity, giving anglers the opportunity to approach the action and cast directly to marlin feeding at the surface.
This is sight fishing at its most intense. Marlin can be approached at close range as they attack bait balls, sometimes swimming alongside and beneath the boat. Fast casting, large flies, powerful tackle, and the ability to react quickly are essential as the feeding activity can change from one moment to the next. Every hookup becomes a test of equipment, stamina, and nerve.
Although Striped Marlin are the main attraction, Magdalena Bay offers an extraordinary variety of additional fishing opportunities. Dorado and tuna can join the offshore action, while roosterfish, jacks, snook, grouper, snapper, corvina, and other species inhabit the beaches, mangroves, flats, and estuaries around the bay.
The experience combines long days on the water with comfortable accommodation close to the most productive fishing grounds, allowing for short boat runs and more time fishing. The current program includes seven nights and five full days of guided fishing, with meals included during the fishing portion of the trip.
